Anya Barkan comes from a diverse background. She was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, grew up in Jerusalem, Israel and moved to Canada in her mid-teens. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science and Engineering with a specialization in Infrastructure Engineering. She later earned her Master’s in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability in Karlskrona, Sweden.
Aside from being a sustainability nerd at home, Anya also pursues sustainability as her career goal. For her Master’s thesis she collaborated with a medium sized manufacturing company, Roxtec, developing a strategy to move their product development process towards sustainability. Anya also worked for Kiewit, a North American construction organization, for 3 years. For the majority of this time, she was part of the Environmental Department, facing the challenges of protecting the environment during extensive construction projects.
Being open-minded and loving the great outdoors, Anya has a passion for cycling, snowboarding, traveling and yoga and is always ready for her next adventure in life.
